There are really only a few basic sex positions, and all others are more or less variations on these. Having said that, many of the variations are extremely pleasurable and feel fantastic! So you could take the view that there really are hundreds of sex positions....but perhaps in the end it doesn't matter, because the important thing is to find the positions which you enjoy, and to make sure that you incorporate enough variation into your sex life to keep pleasure high.

Most couples use one or two positions each time they make love, but they will nearly always finish in their favorite sexual position (usually, I suspect, the man on top position). This does not mean you need to chase after all the exciting variations you can, nor does it mean you should be staid and focus on what you know best. Never was it more true that variety is the spice of life than where sex is concerned!

Intimacy and excitement are increased if you change sexual positions as you make love, and even if what you try doesn't work for you, it can still be great fun to roll around in the bed (metaphorically speaking!) and try out some variations on your usual theme. Just don't be taken in by those books or sites which boast of hundreds of sex positions. It isn't necessary to have a repertoire of hundreds of positions. You can try as many or as few positions as you like to enhance and add pleasure to your sex life, and at the end of the day, all you need is to find what you enjoy and to spend your time focusing on that.

Sex position 1: Woman on top (also called the female superior position)

In the woman on top variations, the female is on top of her man during sexual intercourse, usually straddling him with her knees one on each side of him, somewhere near his hips. She may sit facing him or facing away from him. Clearly, her man will have a view of her breasts one way, and her buttocks the other. It's also possible for a woman to squat over her man, with her feet flat on either side of him, but this puts a big strain on her thighs and she may not be able to keep this up for long, especially if she is riding him, moving up and down on his penis by raising and lowering herself on her haunches. 

What are the advantages of this position for sexual intercourse? The fairly obvious one is that it allows deep penetration and permits the women to control the speed and rhythm of penetration. If the woman is doing most or all of the thrusting, it also allows her to control the pace of sex, which may well determine how fast her man reaches orgasm. It's also a good position if the woman is taller than the man. But it can be demanding; it can require a lot of effort from the woman.

As for men, well, they enjoy it because they like seeing their partner's breasts or buttocks. They enjoy the visual aspects of sex: the sight of breasts or buttocks wobbling with each thrust, the ripple of flesh as bodies come together during lovemaking. The opportunity for men to hold their partner's buttocks or breasts during sex is a wonderfully arousing thing; indeed, for some men it can be so arousing that not ejaculating as soon as their partner gets on top of them can be quite a challenge! Bear in mind, if this sounds familiar, that most men (in fact probably all men) tend not to think about such things when they are making love. They tend to focus more on the wonderful sensations that come from having their penis inside a woman when they are "getting a bit of pussy"!

In such situations, men are more likely to see your body as flawless, or at least not to view it with a critical eye!

How to make sex in the woman on top position better

If you're a woman who wants to reach orgasm ("come") during intercourse, you probably need more clitoral stimulation. You can do this before, during or after sex in the woman on top position! Or you can get almost all the way to orgasm, then mount your man and thrust - this may well tip you over the hill into your orgasm. There are many other ways you can stimulate your partner - try, for example, moving your vulva tantalizingly all along the length of his body as he lies under you - starting with his head and moving down over his face and mouth to his feet , then back again to his penis before you mount him! Allow him to guide you buttocks and hips with is hands as you move on his penis.

Sex Position 2: Man on top (also called the male dominant or male superior sex position)

The good old missionary position or man on top is the most popular sex position. As you know, the woman lies on her back and the man takes her from above, or perhaps slightly to one side of her. Men love this position - it allows deep thrusting and they can control how fast they thrust. When they near orgasm, men are overtaken with an instinctive sexual response, one of fast and deep instinctual thrusting; to be able to express this so profoundly in the man on top position gives men a deeply satisfying sense of sexual fulfillment. Women like man on top sex because of the opportunity for kissing and the extensive bodily contact. It is a romantic position, and one that makes women feel safe and protected during lovemaking.

How to make sex in the man on top position better

For men: as a neat variation on a theme, try thrusting your penis between your lover's breasts as she lies on her back. Have her hold her breasts so that they form a tunnel for your penis to slide in and out of - you may need some lube to make this easier. This is likely to make a man come quite quickly, and you can both enjoy the sensation of him ejaculating on your body.

For women: You can also hold your partner's testicles as he thrusts or perhaps even put a finger on or in his anus as he thrusts - he is likely to find this very exciting!

If your man has an enormous penis, have him lie flat on top of you and keep your legs together as much as possible, so that even if he does not enter you fully, the shaft of his penis is still being stimulated by your thighs. This will also be more comfortable for you.

Sex position 3: Side by side sex

This is a slow, romantic lovemaking position. You can be facing each other or facing the same way, chest to back, with the man behind the woman. The best thing about side by side sex is that men can last much longer this way as there is much less pressure on the penis. Penetration is not as deep in this sex position, so it is much more comfortable for women whose men have larger cocks, especially when the man enters from behind. When you're making love face to face, kissing and hugging are not only possible, but essential! It's also a great sex position for when the man is much taller than the woman. And, best of all, it allows a man to control any tendency he has to premature climax.

Side by side sex is the best position for falling asleep in each others' arms after sex.

How to make sex in the side by side position better

For women: Have the man stimulate your clitoris. Tighten your thighs to increase friction and speed things up. If you are pregnant, try side by side sex from behind. This allows support for the abdomen and he can play with your breasts.

For men: enjoy the opportunity to stimulate your partner's clitoris and work towards simultaneous orgasm.
